Our kennel and our breeding philosophy

We regularly receive questions about our working methods. In particular, why we have a waiting list and how many litters of puppies we breed per year, considering that we have multiple dogs.

Our vision in this has always remained the same:
We only breed when we fully support a combination and only if we would potentially want to keep a puppy from that combination ourselves.

On average, we breed no more than 15 to 20 puppies per year.
We only repeat a combination of sire and dam in very rare exceptions. This is also the reason why we keep multiple sires, for which we of course have the space and proper facilities.

We are not dependent on the income from our litters of puppies.
Of course, we ask for a fee for our puppies. With this, we cover the costs for, among other things, food, veterinary care, inspections, and extensive health tests. In some cases, our price is slightly higher than average, partly because we also work with foreign studs, which brings additional costs.

When puppies have to stay with us longer (for export to some countries, this can be up to about 10 months), we ensure that a maximum of two puppies per litter stay longer. This allows us to give each puppy the proper attention, socialization, and guidance. Our experience is that raising two puppies at the same time is manageable, but it is an intensive task. However, this can result in longer waiting times for future owners in the respective countries. Despite the sometimes strict import regulations, we would like to continue cooperating here because we believe that the diversity of bloodlines in the respective countries is beneficial for the Bernese Mountain Dog.

We mainly keep our own male dogs for our own use. When we receive a request to use a male dog, we look at the pedigree and health tests of the relevant female dog. Based on our knowledge and experience with the bloodlines from our dogs, we make a well-considered choice.
If a combination does not feel appropriate to us, we choose not to participate. This has nothing to do with the quality of the female dog in question, but with our own vision of responsible breeding.

Housing and care of our dogs.
It is not realistic to keep a larger number of dogs the size of the Bernese Mountain Dog indoors 24 hours a day. Therefore, we consciously choose a varied way of housing. Our dogs stay both indoors and outdoors. Puppies, of course, grow up mostly indoors, so that they can socialize optimally in a home environment.

Each dog has about 60 m² of living space, equipped with windows for a natural day and night rhythm and heated. In addition, our dogs are running free, play more times a day in a large area and are regularly taken to the nature reserve, the forest, or the city.

If you want advice or have questions about purchasing or raising, taking care of a Bernese Mountain puppy, you can always contact us without obligation.
